UAV: Swarms and Future Materials

Author: Lance Winslow

In the future thousands of UAVs, unmanned aerial vehicles in swarms maybe launched in the new technologically advanced net-centric battlespace in a futuristic robotic war. Robotics in warfare are becoming more and more prevalent from surveillance, offensive and defensive uses. This trend will continued and today the USAF already has 15 squadrons of UAVs protecting our military assets and assisting our soldiers in combat.

One concept in the future will be launching swarms of UAVs as an offensive weapon in the battlespace to insure overwhelming our enemy with too many targets to kill, this maybe a preferred tactic. These UAVs will use shape shifting wings and fuselages to increase performance and speed once launched. The UAV will have a fat leading edge wing, which is large for takeoff and once airborne we will hit the entire swarm with a microwave beam or laser to heat the skin of the swarms, which will affect the manufactured material memory of those components and cause them to shrink. Thus the swarm can fly a much faster speed on its way to the target.

This will be done by using a cage type configuration as part of the aircrafts structural makeup with the outer cage a secondary skin. This skin will expand into its self when it is heated up. This will allow UAV Swarms to carry large loads and once off the ground the speed can increase to keep them aloft. By using space age materials and techniques now available the UAVs will be used in swarms to win wars. Think on this.
